What is Restless Leg Syndrome?

Restless leg syndrome is a condition that causes a very strong urge to move the legs. The urge to move usually is caused by an uncomfortable sensation in the legs. It typically happens in the evening or at night when sitting or lying down. Moving eases the discomfort for a short time.

Symptoms

Symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome include:

  • Uncomfortable sensations in the legs, often described as crawling, throbbing, or pulling-Uncontrollable urge to move the legs.
  • Relief upon movement or stretching.
  • Discomfort that leads to sleep disruption.
  • Symptoms that worsen during times of inactivity.

Restless legs and venous insufficiency

Venous insufficiency is a condition where veins have difficulty sending blood from the limbs bak to the heart, leading to symptoms like fatigue, aching, and swelling in the legs.

Venous insufficiency can worsen or contribute to developing restless leg syndrome. Patients who have venous insufficiency often report symptoms resembling RLS. If related to venous insufficiency, your restless leg symptoms can be significantly reduced with treatment.

The treatments offered for venous insufficiency may drastically reduce the uncomfortable sensations that drive the uncontrollable urge to move the legs.

Treatments for Restless Legs

Compression Therapy

Compression stockings may be recommended to reduce swelling and pain by applying gentle pressure to the legs. This is especially effective as early intervention for venous insufficiency.

Lifestyle Changes

Regular exercise with leg movement can greatly improve circulation. Avoid prolonged sitting or standing, and be mindful of weight management.

Minimally Invasive Procedures

Minimally invasive procedures such as Endovenous Radiofreuncy Ablation, Verithena, and Sclerotherapy.
