Spider Veins

What Are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are small, twisted blood vessels visible just beneath the skin’s surface. They often appear as thin, web-like networks of red, blue, or purple veins and are commonly found on the legs, ankles, or face.

These veins develop when tiny valves inside the veins weaken or become damaged, allowing blood to pool and increase pressure in the vein. As a result, the veins become enlarged and visible through the skin.

While spider veins are primarily a cosmetic concern and are usually harmless, some people may experience burning, itching, or mild discomfort, especially after long periods of standing or sitting. They can also worsen and become Varicose Veins, requiring further treatment. It’s important to stop spider veins in their tracks before more uncomfortable vein issues arise.

At University Center for Vein Disorders, we understand how spider veins can affect both your confidence and comfort. Our goal is to provide advanced, minimally invasive treatments to restore your skin’s appearance and improve your overall well-being.

Signs and Symptoms

Spider veins are generally easy to recognize because of their appearance. Common signs include:

  • Thin, branching lines or web-like clusters of red, blue, or purple veins
  • Patterns resembling tree branches or spider webs on the legs, ankles, or even the face
  • Mild burning, itching, or soreness around the affected areas
  • Veins that appear more pronounced after prolonged standing

Although spider veins rarely pose serious health risks, they can be an early sign of venous insufficiency when accompanied by swelling, heaviness, or cramping in the legs.

What Causes Spider Veins?

Spider veins develop when the small valves within the veins stop functioning properly. Normally, these valves open and close to help push blood back toward the heart. When they weaken or become damaged, blood begins to pool in the vein, creating increased pressure that stretches the vein walls and makes them visible just beneath the skin’s surface.

Several factors can increase your risk of developing spider veins:

  • Genetics: A family history of vein problems can make you more susceptible.
  • Aging: As veins lose elasticity over time, the valves weaken and become less effective.
  • Hormonal Changes: Fluctuations during pregnancy, menopause, or from birth control pills can put added stress on vein walls.
  • Lifestyle Factors: Long hours of standing or sitting, weight gain, or lack of movement can all increase pressure on the leg veins.
  • Sun Exposure or Past Injuries: UV rays can damage small facial veins, and previous leg trauma can also contribute.

Although spider veins are generally harmless, addressing them early can enhance your appearance, relieve discomfort, and sometimes help prevent further vein issues like larger varicose veins.

Treatment Options We Offer

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)

Uses gentle heat to seal damaged veins with minimal discomfort. Energy is applied strategically to the area to close the vein.

Varithena

One of the latest advancements in the treatment of varicose veins. In this non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure, we use a specialized microfoam to collapse and close affected veins, improving blood flow and reducing the appearance and discomfort of varicose veins.

Sclerotherapy

An injection-based therapy for smaller varicose and spider veins, which can drastically reduce their appearance after treating the root cause of your venous insufficiency.

Our procedures are performed in-office, typically requiring little to no downtime, allowing you to return to your normal activities quickly.
