Procedure
To start the procedure, you will be given anesthesia to ensure you are completely asleep and comfortable throughout the surgery. Depending on your condition and your surgeon’s recommendation, an incision is made on the front, back, or side of your abdomen. Before the surgery, your surgeon will explain which approach is best suited to your needs, taking into account the location of the problem and the type of fusion required.
Once the incision is made, the surgeon carefully removes any damaged disc material from the affected area. If the vertebrae have shifted out of place, causing pressure on your nerves, the surgeon will carefully reposition the vertebrae into a more natural alignment. This helps to relieve pressure and alleviate pain. Your surgeon will then insert one or more interbody devices into the space where the disc was removed. These devices are implants that are packed with bone graft material. The bone graft helps promote healing by encouraging new bone growth between the vertebrae.
Interbody devices come in various shapes, sizes, and materials. Your surgeon will choose the best option based on your individual needs. These implants serve to stabilize the spine, support healing, and create the foundation for a successful fusion. Over time, the graft material encourages the vertebrae to fuse together, which helps restore stability and reduces the risk of further damage or discomfort.
After the surgery, you will be monitored in a recovery room as you begin to wake up from anesthesia. Your medical team will keep an eye on your recovery, and once you are stable, your surgeon will give you instructions on when you can go home. Following your surgeon’s advice and attending follow-up appointments will ensure a smooth and safe recovery process.
