What is Restless Legs Syndrome?

Restless legs syndrome, also called Willis-Ekbom disease, is a neurological sleep disorder that causes an intense, involuntary urge to move the legs (and even the arms or the rest of the body). Other sensations in the extremities may also occur, such as pulling, crawling, throbbing, itching, pain, or burning.

These sensations usually occur when the patient remains lying in bed or sitting for a long time, such as while driving or playing. Furthermore, people of any age, including children, can suffer from restless legs syndrome. Symptoms can begin in childhood or adulthood, but the likelihood of developing the disorder increases significantly with age and is more common in women.

How to Recognize Restless Legs Syndrome

Signs and symptoms of restless legs syndrome can range from mild to severe, interfering with the patient’s daily activities. These include:

Discomfort

These urges usually occur at night, but can occur at other times when the limbs are inactive, such as when sitting for long periods.

Need to Move Legs

To relieve discomfort in the limbs, the patient has an uncontrollable need to move their limbs, especially when resting, sitting or lying down.

Sleep Disturbance

It often takes longer to fall asleep due to the need to move the limbs to relieve discomfort. At times, staying asleep can also be difficult due to impulse that can cause sudden movements that constantly awaken the patient.

Behavioral and Work Performance Problems

Due to sleep disturbance, daytime behavioral problems (irritability, bad mood, difficulty concentrating, hyperactivity, etc.) may arise, which can affect work performance.

Symptoms usually affect both sides of the body, but some people experience the signs and symptoms described only on one side.

What Can Trigger Restless Legs Syndrome?

Often, the cause of the restless legs syndrome is unknown. However, there are certain factors that can increase the likelihood of developing it:

Pregnancy

Pregnancy or hormonal changes can temporarily worsen the signs and symptoms of restless leg syndrome. Some women experience this disorder for the first time during pregnancy, especially during the last trimester. However, symptoms usually disappear after delivery.

Chronic Conditions

Certain chronic conditions include signs and symptoms of restless legs syndrome, such as iron deficiency, Parkinson’s disease, kidney failure, diabetes, and peripheral neuropathy.

Medications

Some medications can worsen the signs and symptoms of restless legs syndrome, such as anti-nausea, antipsychotics, some antidepressants, and allergy medications (antihistamines).

Patient’s Bad Habits

Lack of sleep or other sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, can trigger restless legs syndrome. Consumption of alcohol, tobacco, and caffeine can also trigger this condition.
