Varicose veins, those unsightly and often painful swollen blood vessels that appear predominantly in the legs, can affect your physical comfort and self-esteem. If you have varicose veins, we have good news. There are many varicose vein treatment options available to you.

Our providers at University Pain Medicine Center offer several effective treatments to help banish varicose veins and restore the appearance and health of your legs. Let’s take a look at your options to determine which one might be right for you.

Varicose Vein Treatment Options

We offer four different types of treatments, including:

Endovenous laser ablation

Endovenous laser ablation, also known as laser therapy, is a minimally invasive procedure we use to treat large varicose veins. We insert a thin laser fiber into the affected vein through a small incision during the procedure. The laser emits precise energy that seals the vein shut.

Over time, your body absorbs the closed vein, and blood flow reroutes through healthier veins. Endovenous laser ablation is highly effective, minimally painful, and usually performed as an outpatient procedure, allowing for a speedy recovery.

Endovenous radiofrequency ablation

Similar to endovenous laser ablation, endovenous radiofrequency ablation uses thermal energy to close off problematic veins. We insert a catheter with a radiofrequency electrode into your vein and use radiofrequency energy to heat and seal your vein walls.

The procedure typically takes less than an hour and is performed with local anesthesia. This procedure is an excellent option for larger varicose veins, offering minimal discomfort and a quick recovery.

Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is an effective treatment for small to medium-sized varicose veins and spider veins. We inject a special solution, called a sclerosant, directly into the affected veins. The solution irritates the vein walls, causing them to collapse and eventually be absorbed by your body.

Sclerotherapy is a relatively painless outpatient procedure that may require multiple sessions for optimal results. It’s an excellent solution for cosmetic concerns.

Microphlebectomy

Microphlebectomy, also known as ambulatory phlebectomy, is a surgical procedure designed to remove larger, bulging varicose veins through tiny incisions. While it may sound more invasive, microphlebectomy is a highly effective, safe treatment for more extensive varicose veins.

We use local anesthesia to perform this procedure, and most patients can resume their normal activities shortly afterward. Microphlebectomy can provide immediate relief from discomfort and improve the appearance of your legs.

Choosing the right treatment for varicose veins

Selecting the appropriate treatment for your varicose veins depends on various factors, including the size and severity of your veins, your overall health, and your preferences.  During your consultation with our team of experts, we can help determine the best course of action for your specific needs.

We’ll consider several aspects of your condition. For example, if you have cosmetic concerns, such as spider veins, we may recommend sclerotherapy as the preferred choice. But if you have larger, symptomatic varicose veins, both endovenous laser ablation and endovenous radiofrequency ablation may be the most effective options.

For more extensive varicose veins, especially those that cause significant discomfort, microphlebectomy may offer the quickest relief.
