HOW CAN YOU BENEFIT FROM BMA?
Regenerative injection therapy using bone marrow aspiration (BMA) is a recent development in medical science that has seen extraordinary results across a number of different patient types and ailments. The revolutionary new therapy has been shown to treat:
- Lumbar disc degeneration
- Ligament injuries
- Muscle sprains
- Plantar fasciitis
- Osteoarthritis
- Sports injuries
- Neuropathy
- Many other injuries or ailments
Here at the University Pain Medicine Center, we pride ourselves on delivering care that is minimally invasive and provides the maximum effectiveness for pain management. The pain consultants at our office in Edison, NJ (and, of course, our other offices), always work with each patient to determine the best route to pain management for them. BMA is a new treatment we offer, and one we anticipate will continue to grow in popularity, even more so than it already has.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
During a short, non-invasive, outpatient procedure, bone marrow aspirate is drawn out of the hip bone (iliac crest) to be used on the area undergoing the treatment, whether it is bone, muscle, or ligament. The aspirate is then reinjected, and after a short period, the patient can then head home with no side effects.
WHY THE HIP BONE?
Bone marrow inside of the iliac crest contains a large number of stem cells that go mostly unused by the body throughout the duration of a patient’s life. These stem cells can be reapplied to injured or ailing areas prompting new growth and healing. Stem cell therapy has been viewed as one of the most effective and exciting new medical technologies since the turn of the century; while their use is relatively new, their applications seem to be wide and varied.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THIS AND CORTISONE?
Cortisone shots are shown to temporarily relieve pain, necessitating injections over and over again. Cortisone is also shown in some studies to weaken tissue in the affected area, leading to greater pain over time. BMA therapy is provided with the intent of healing the injury or ailment, not just reducing the pain level.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO WORK?
Once the stem cells go to work on the area, healing begins immediately. Most patients notice results in 2-6 weeks.
